GLOSSARY TERM
Overcoating
Applying a new layer of paint over an existing one.
INFO
What it is
Overcoating is the application of a new coat of paint over an existing, sound coating. It refreshes or recolours a surface without stripping back to bare substrate.
Why it matters
Where the existing coating is in good condition, overcoating is faster and more economical than full removal. It does, however, depend on the old surface being sound, clean, and compatible with the new product.
Where it is used on a project
Common on cladding, curtain walling, and shopfronts being refreshed or rebranded, where the existing finish can be prepared and recoated rather than removed.
How NECC approaches it
We assess the existing coating, prepare it correctly, and confirm compatibility before overcoating, so the new finish bonds well and lasts without the cost of stripping back.
