GLOSSARY TERM
Intercoat Adhesion
The adhesion between different layers of paint or coatings.
INFO
What it is
Intercoat adhesion is the strength of the bond between successive layers of paint in a coating system, rather than the bond to the original surface. It is how well the coats stick to each other.
Why it matters
If layers do not bond well, the system can delaminate, with the topcoat peeling away from the coat beneath. Good intercoat adhesion is essential for the whole build to perform as one durable film.
Where it is used on a project
A consideration in every multi-coat system, particularly where coats are applied over time or where different products are combined.
How NECC approaches it
We apply coats within the correct recoat windows, keep surfaces clean between layers, and use compatible products, so the full system bonds together and lasts.
