GLOSSARY TERM
Bleed Through
When underlying stains or colours seep through the topcoat of paint.
INFO
What it is
Bleed through is when a stain, dye, or contaminant in the surface beneath rises up and shows through a freshly applied coat of paint, discolouring the finish.
Why it matters
It spoils the appearance of an otherwise good job and cannot be fixed by simply applying more topcoat, since the contaminant keeps migrating. Preventing it at the preparation stage is the only reliable cure.
Where it is used on a project
A risk on timber with natural tannins, surfaces with water or rust stains, and areas affected by nicotine or marker pen. Recognising the risk before painting is key.
How NECC approaches it
We identify surfaces at risk during preparation and seal them with an appropriate stain-blocking primer, so the finished coating stays clean and even.

FAQ's
What causes bleed through?
Stains, tannins from timber, rust, nicotine, and certain old dyes can all migrate up through a new coat if they are not sealed first.
Can bleed through be prevented?
Yes. Applying a suitable stain-blocking primer seals the surface so the contaminant cannot rise into the finish.
