GLOSSARY TERM
Blast Cleaning
The process of cleaning a surface using high-speed abrasive particles.
INFO
What it is
Blast cleaning is the process of cleaning a surface by firing abrasive particles at it under high pressure. It strips away rust, mill scale, old coatings, and contaminants in one operation.
Why it matters
It is one of the most effective ways to return a surface to a sound, clean state ready for recoating. As well as cleaning, it creates a surface profile that gives the new coating something to grip.
Where it is used on a project
Widely used on steelwork, structural metal, and heavily weathered surfaces where lighter cleaning would not remove deep corrosion or stubborn old coatings.
How NECC approaches it
We use blast cleaning where a surface needs a thorough reset before coating, selecting the method and media to suit the substrate and controlling debris on site for safe, clean working.

FAQ's
Is blast cleaning the same as sandblasting?
Both use abrasive media. Blast cleaning is the broad term for cleaning a surface this way, while sandblasting refers specifically to using sand as the media.
What does blast cleaning achieve?
It removes rust, scale, and old coatings while creating the profile a new coating needs to bond, making it one of the most thorough prep methods.
