GLOSSARY TERM

Adhesion

The ability of paint or coating to stick to the surface on which it is applied.

INFO

What it is

Adhesion is the ability of a paint or coating to stick firmly to the surface beneath it. It describes the strength of the bond between the dried film and the substrate, and between successive coats.

Why it matters

Adhesion is the single biggest factor in how long a coating lasts. Poor adhesion leads to peeling, flaking, and blistering, often within months. Strong adhesion keeps the finish intact through years of weathering and use.

Where it is used on a project

Good adhesion depends on correct surface preparation and the right primer for the substrate. It is especially critical on smooth or previously coated surfaces such as aluminium cladding, curtain walling, and powder-coated metal.

How NECC approaches it

We prepare every surface thoroughly and select coating systems suited to the substrate, so the finish bonds properly and stays put. Sound adhesion is what stands behind the durability of our work.

FAQ's

What causes poor paint adhesion?

Usually inadequate surface preparation, contamination such as grease or dust, or using a coating that is not suited to the substrate.

How can adhesion be improved?

Thorough cleaning, the correct surface profile, and a primer matched to the substrate all help the coating form a strong, lasting bond.
